Fourth Annual Fort McHenry Tunnel Run
5K Event Benefits Special Olympics Maryland;

BALTIMORE, MD The MD Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police will host the fourth annual Fort McHenry Tunnel 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, Sept. 16. The race begins at 9 a.m. and will take participants on an out-and-back course through the right northbound tunnel tube. All northbound vehicular traffic will be directed through the other northbound tube until the conclusion of the event at approximately 12 noon.
The MDTA Police have put in place the following safety measures for the event:
- Backpacks, fanny packs and bags/diaper bags are NOT permitted unless they are made of see-through material. Participants should use clear plastic bags to carry items.
- Pets and wheeled transportation are prohibited. However, wheelchairs, assistance dogs, strollers and small wagons used to carry children are permitted.
- MDTA Police and Special Olympics Maryland (SOMD) personnel will be stationed throughout the tunnel to assist participants as needed.
Awards will be presented to the top three males and females overall, Top Law Enforcement and to the top three males and females overall in the following age groups: 15 & under, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+. Team awards will be presented to the top three teams overall (based on time). All event participants are invited to join in a post-race celebration sponsored by SOMD. The entry fee is $25 now and $30 on race day.
As long-time supporters of SOMD, the MDTA Police participate in the Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run and previously hosted the ICC 5K Run/Walk and 10-mile Family Bike Ride in Gaithersburg and the MDTA Police Plane Pull at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport to benefit SOMD.
