The MD Transportation Authority's (MDTA) preservation project continues on the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge (US 301) across the Potomac River.  The ongoing project includes cleaning, painting and repair work that began earlier this spring.

The Nice Bridge will be reduced to one lane with flagging operations alternating northbound and southbound traffic during the following off-peak hours:

 

  • Sunday, June 2 through Thursday, June 6 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning.

 

  • Starting Tuesday, June 4 daytime flagging operations will take place Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for approximately three weeks until ladders and scaffolding can be removed from the bridge.

 

  • Starting Saturday, June 8, overnight work will shift to a Saturday through Thursday schedule with Saturday hours from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning and Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning.

 

Trucks greater than 10-feet wide will not be permitted to cross the bridge during flagging operations. Every effort will be made to cross all vehicles exceeding 10-feet from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Drivers of vehicles exceeding the width restriction must call 301-259-4444 to obtain approval and schedule an escort.  Calls must be made one hour prior to arrival at the bridge and will only be accepted between 8 a.m. and  4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

When traveling through work zones:

·         Slow Down Obey posted speed limits.

·         Be Courteous Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.

·         Pay Attention to Work Zone Signs, Equipment and Flaggers They help drivers move safely.

·         Avoid Distracted Driving Devote your full attention to the road.

Lane Closures and Traffic Patterns

Scheduled for the Week of June 2 - 8, 2013

 

All work will be performed weather permitting.  The MDTA urges motorists to drive with caution and obey all traffic-control devices and lane-control signals.  Lane closures are subject to change and closure times are dependent on traffic volumes. 

 

TOLL DOLLARS AT WORK

 

The westbound span may be closed Sunday from midnight to 5 a.m. for preservation/maintenance work.  Two-way traffic will operate on the eastbound span during the full westbound span closures.

One lane of the westbound span may be closed Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for preservation/maintenance work. 

REMINDER: NEW lane markings and rumble strips have been installed on the westbound span.  Lane changes between the left and center lanes are PROHIBITED for the entire span.

The MDTA offers the following travel tips for the summer months:

·        Travel off-peak when heading to and from the Eastern Shore.  The best times to travel the Bay Bridge on weekends include:

  •          Thursday before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.
  •          Friday before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.
  •          Saturday before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m.
  •          Sunday before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.

Facility: (I-695) FSK, Curtis Creek Drawbridge

(I-695) CURTIS CREEK DRAWBRIDGE OPENINGS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 2-3, 2013 

The (I-695) Curtis Creek Drawbridge will open for U.S. Coast Guard water traffic on June 2-3, 2013.  Drawbridge will remain open until water traffic passes beneath.

DRAWBRIDGE SCHEDULE:

  1. Sunday, June 2 - 11:30 a.m.
  2. Monday, June 3 - 12 p.m.

Facility: (I-95) Fort McHenry Tunnel

(I-95) Fort McHenry Tunnel Closures for the Week of May 27, 2013

The following closures are tentatively scheduled at the Fort McHenry Tunnel the week of May 27, 2013 through June 02, 2013:

  • Monday 5/27 - No closures scheduled
  • Tuesday 5/28 - No closures scheduled
  • Wednesday 5/29 - Bore 2 & Bore 4 for tunnel washing and scheduled maintenance
  • Thursday 5/30 - Bore 2 for tunnel washing
  • Friday 5/31 - No closures scheduled
  • Saturday 6/01 - No closures scheduled
  • Sunday 6/02 - No closures scheduled  

This is a tentative schedule subject to change due to weather, heavy traffic, incidents or priority closures.

The Westbound Tunnel is scheduled to be closed at 9 p.m. on the evenings of May 28, 29 and 30, 2013, for concrete roadway work, priority lighting repairs and maintenance operations.  Re-opening is scheduled to take place at 4:30 a.m. the following mornings.

This is a tentative schedule that is subject to change at any time with little notice due to weather, traffic conditions, emergency incidents or priority closures.

The westbound span may be closed Wednesday and Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Saturday from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. for preservation/maintenance work.  Two-way traffic will operate on the eastbound span during the full westbound span closures.

One lane of the eastbound span may be closed Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for preservation/maintenance work.  Two-way traffic will operate on the westbound span.

When daytime two-way traffic is in effect on the westbound span, toll lanes 1 through 5, on the left side of the toll plaza, will be directed into contra-flow traffic on the westbound span.  Motorists wishing to use an E-ZPass® Only lane to access the eastbound span should use toll lanes 6 or 9.

Tuesday, May 21, at approximately 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, the ramp from southbound I-95 to Eastern Avenue (Exit 59) will be partially closed for Baltimore City water main work on Eastern Avenue.  The ramp's two right lanes to westbound Eastern Avenue will be closed.  Baltimore City will have additional lane closures on westbound Eastern Avenue.

The detour route will direct motorists to eastbound Eastern Avenue, to North Point Boulevard, to westbound Eastern Avenue.

Ramp lanes reopening is subject to pending work progress.

BRIDGE DECK PROJECT UNDERWAY ON RAMP FROM NORTHBOUND I-97 TO NORTHBOUND I-895

   Ramp closed 24/7 for three months      

The ramp from northbound I-97 to northbound I-895 will be continuously closed (24/7) for approximately three months.  The detour route will direct motorists to westbound I-695 (Inner Loop), to northbound MD 295, to northbound I-895.  The ramp from MD 2 (Ritchie Highway) to northbound I-895 will remain open during the three-month closure period.  Single-lane and shoulder closures may be in effect on I-895 during off-peak hours.

Although the I-895 ramp will be closed for three months, the total project is expected to last until early 2014.  The Marksmen Company of Baltimore will remove the existing concrete deck surface and replace it with a latex modified concrete overlay.  Work also includes drainage improvements and miscellaneous structural repairs.

BRIDGE WORK AND INSPECTIONS ON NICE BRIDGE WILL BE LIFTED THURSDAY, MAY 23 - MONDAY, MAY 27, 2013

Bridge work and inspection operations will resume Tuesday, May 28, 2013.

The Nice Bridge is currently reduced to one lane with flagging operations alternating northbound and southbound traffic during the following overnight off-peak hours: Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning and Friday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning.

Daytime flagging operations are during the following off-peak hours: Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
