Reminder: Vehicles Transporting Hazardous Materials Prohibited in I-95 & I-895 Tunnels

Diesel Fuel Transports Permitted

Vehicles carrying bottled propane gas in excess of 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using both the I-95 Fort McHenry and I-895 Baltimore Harbor tunnels. It does not matter whether or not the bottles are turned on or off. This is the case for personal and business usage. These vehicles should use the western section of I-695 around tunnels.

It is important to note that diesel fuel transports (placard 1993) are permitted in tunnels. While bearing flammable placards, these carriers are classified as hauling combustibles due to their higher flashpoint and lesser hazard to the public.

Vehicles in excess of 13’-6”, in height, or 96” (8 feet) in width are prohibited from using the I-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel restrictions are height – 14’ - 6” width – 11’ - 0”. The MDTA Police Commercial Vehicle Safety Unit (CVSU) diligently monitors these areas to enforce compliance with safety regulations.

Normal tunnel permit load restrictions apply. Learn more here https://mdta.maryland.gov/propane.html.

Truck drivers traveling through Baltimore City should visit Baltimore Department of Transportation’s recommended truck routes official truck map at Baltimore City Official Truck Routes (arcgis.com).

Please adhere to posted speed limits and obey overhead lane signals at all bridge and tunnel facilities. Double (side-by-side) separation of lanes where Solid–White travel is in the same direction, indicates lane changing is prohibited. Changing lanes in tunnels and on bridges can be hazardous, especially with minimal or no shoulders.

MDTA Police remind the public that you can report aggressive or dangerous driving on Maryland toll roads by calling MDTA Police Dispatch at 410-537-7911.

With the southeast corridor of I-695 closed (learn more https://mdta.maryland.gov/keybridgenews), all drivers are strongly encouraged to allow extra travel times using the alternate routes on I-95, I-895 and other sections of I-695, especially during morning and after rush hour periods.

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) and its partners continue to ask for patience from the motoring public during this unprecedented time.
