MDTA POLICE APPREHEND SUSPECT ACCUSED OF SHOOTING AT POLICE OFFICER

BALTIMORE, MD - During a routine traffic stop yesterday on I-95, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police apprehended a North Carolina man wanted on multiple felony probation violations.

On Nov. 30, 2015, Goldsboro, N.C., police charged Shadell Issiah Barksdale after he shot at an officer with a handgun during a traffic stop. Barksdale was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a law-enforcement officer and several other charges. A warrant was later issued for his arrest for violating probation on previous charges.

MDTA Police Officer R. Guarnaccia stopped Barksdale for speeding and following too closely at approximately 5:15 p.m. on southbound I-95 near the Fort McHenry Tunnel toll plaza. During the traffic stop, Barksdale provided a false name to officers, who charged him with multiple traffic charges, including driving on a suspended license, and transported him to the Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Facility to await extradition to North Carolina.

"I applaud the great work done by my officers yesterday - just one example of the effort MDTA Police Officers put forth every day to keep Marylanders safe," said MDTA Police Chief Colonel Jerry Jones. "This arrest also highlights the dangers law enforcement faces across the country in our communities and along our highways."

A Maryland State Police Trooper assisted the MDTA Police during the traffic stop.
