MDTA POLICE STEPPING UP IMPAIRED

DRIVING ENFORCEMENT DURING THE HOLIDAYS

Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving

BALTIMORE, MD - The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police will be out in full force from Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, through Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, conducting high-visibility enforcement to remove impaired drivers from area roadways.

"We remind motorists to be safe during their celebrations and plan ahead. If you see a drunk driver on the road, report him or her to law enforcement immediately by calling 911," said MDTA Police Chief Col. Jerry Jones.

Every holiday season, lives are lost due to impaired drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, from 2012-2016, 14,472 people lost their lives in motor-vehicle crashes during the month of December and 28 percent (3,995) died in a crash that involved a driver with a blood-alcohol content of .08 or higher.

The MDTA Police remind you to use mass transit, take a taxi, call a friend or use a ride share service if you will be drinking alcohol.

The MDTA Police are committed to reducing traffic crashes that result in serious injuries and deaths on our roadways. So far this year, the MDTA Police have made 944 impaired-driving arrests.

The MDTA Police supports the "Toward Zero Deaths" campaign -- a partnership to save lives and prevent injuries on Maryland's roadways. For more information, visit towardzerodeathsmd.com.
